Matthew 27

Writing about the crucifixion is difficult. It’s not there’s not enough material to write on, or that so much has been written that a writer must wonder how to say anything in a fresh way. Nor is it that there is so much here that one wonders where to focus. Indeed, the cross draws us like a magnet draws iron.

No the problem with writing about the crucifixion is that sometimes, as you see God do His work, the only appropriate response is to shut up. Like Job, when he was confronted by God, when we see Jesus accomplishing salvation and all he did to win the battle over sin and death, when we hear his words from the cross, the mockery of those there and the conclusion of the soldier, “Truly this was the Son of God!” there is a sense that all I can do – the right thing to do – is put my hand over my mouth.

Jesus loves you. Look what he was willing to do to save you!

Father in Heaven, your servant Paul told us that when we don’t know what to say the Holy Spirit intercedes for us with groans beyond our understanding. Let Him give words to the emotions of my heart when I view Jesus and his cross. Amen.
