Psalm 2

Why do the nations rage?   This Psalm acknowledges the fact that we live in a world that is not neutral.  In fact it is openly hostile to God and his Kingdom.  They mock His Law and try to set it aside so that they can be their own rulers.  But it doesn't matter how often someone says, "The King is dead!" if the King is still alive and reigning.  God still rules in this world no matter if human judgement doesn't see it or like it.

He who sits in heaven laughs.  God is not far away as some suppose (or wish) Him to be.  As He goes about His primary work of restoring people through Jesus' death and resurrection He delays the punishment for the wicked to give them a chance to hear the gospel, repent and to turn.  But He also laughs at those who go through all sorts of contortions to say He does not exist.  Their presence and doubting may bother us.  Their "logical" or "scientific" "proofs" may worry and bother us, but God is not intimidated, nor does He wonder, "How shall I prove Myself to them."  He has already given His Son.  What more does He need to do?  So He laughs in derision.

One day God will speak again.  Out loud.  The Trumpet will sound and the dead in Christ will rise.  Then those who scoffed and mocked will be terrified at the Lord's voice and at his presence.  They will cry out to the rocks and hills to hide them from Jesus' face and voice.  Yet that voice will be sweet joy to all who believe and are waiting for His coming!  Blessed, indeed, are all who take refuge in him!
