Luke 1 - http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke%201&version=ESV
How do
you respond to God’s grace and goodness in your life? What do you do when God interrupts your
everyday life and proclaims His salvation to you?
In Luke
1 we meet some regular, ordinary, everyday people who are going about their
business when God sends an angel to them. After this moment their lives were wonderfully
changed by God’s grace.
Their
lives were wonderfully changed, but that does not mean the experience was
easy. Zechariah could not speak until
John was born. Mary had to deal with the
stigma of being pregnant outside of marriage, and Matthew tells us that her fiancé
was going to dump her. Yet, through
their lives God was bringing salvation to all people.
God
still works through regular, ordinary, everyday people to bring salvation into
people’s lives. He works in everyday
circumstances, even (maybe especially!) the hard ones, to bring eternal life to
people. God’s plan is to work through fallen
people to bring hope, life and salvation to other fallen people in the
world.
It might be tempting to think, “But
He’s never sent me an angel to tell me about His salvation.” Perhaps not, but he has sent you His
Son. “Long ago, at many times and in
many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he
has spoken to us by his Son….” (Hebrews
1:1-2 ESV)
God has broken into your life. He reached out to your through Jesus Himself
by touching you with His Word, directly in your ears or connected to water in
Baptism. He still gives you life through
His Word, Baptism and the Lord’s Supper.
You have been swept up into God’s plan of salvation in Jesus and He uses
you to bring the Good News to normal everyday people who don’t know Jesus …
yet.
Father in Heaven, too
often I overlook how you have worked in my life. Help me to rejoice in your salvation and
share it with others. Amen.
