Scripture: John
17:1–11
Having had this reading earlier in the week, please resist
the temptation to skim it over (although if you have time for nothing more,
please skim!) and take your devotion time to re-read the Gospel lesson slowly.
Pray for the Holy Spirit to teach you as you read the
Scripture lesson, and ask him to teach you to pray, opening your heart and mind
to pray according to God’s will.
Prayer
On Fridays you will be encouraged to pray for a variety of
prayer requests. The hope is that through these prayer requests we will,
obviously, intercede for those who need prayer, and that we will learn to think
more broadly in our prayers. If time is short, you could simply pray the Lord’s
Prayer.
Pray for people to know the One God has sent, Jesus Christ,
who gives eternal life to all who believe in him.
Pray for God’s people to know his Word, and through the Word
to know Jesus, and through Jesus to know God.
Pray for God’s people to be one: one in faith, one in
forgiveness, one under Christ, one in his forgiveness, one united in Jesus’
Word.
Pray for those who suffer for the faith that they/we would
do so gladly, hopefully, and courageously, and that, whether we are persecuted
or not, we would conduct ourselves in a manner worthy of the Gospel.
Pray for God to preserve his people through the telling and
retelling of his salvation story.
Pray for the Church to be united in one mind through the
reading of God’s Word and for our hearts to be united in prayer for all things
that we need and all things God would have us ask of him.
Pray for pastors.
Pray for your congregation.
Pray for the Spirit to be upon all of God’s people to strengthen,
comfort, enlighten, and guard us.
Pray for the sick, the hurting, the grieving, and the dying.
