July 26, 2017 - Psalm 125

Listen here.

Psalm 125 is one of the Songs of Ascents.
 - There are15 Songs of Ascents
 - They may be called Songs of Ascents because:
      1. They were sung from the 15 steps between the Court of Women and the Court of Israelites in the temple OR
      2. They were sung by worshippers on their way up to Jerusalem, which is on the top of a hill.

This psalm reminds us of God's protection. We are unmovable and we live everlasting lives because Jesus has redeemed us from sin and we are surrounded by God's love, forgiveness, and protection through the presence of the Holy Spirit in and with us.

We remember that Jesus' death and resurrection, delivered to us in our baptisms, set us free from wickedness so that we genuinely desire and pray for God's will to be done. The Small Catechism reminds us that, "God's will is done when He breaks and hinders every evil plan and purpose of the devil, the world, and our sinful nature, which do not want us to hallow God's name or let His kingdom come; and when He strengthens and keeps us firm in His Word and faith until we die. This is His good and gracious will."

Prayer
O God, we trust in You, and because You surround us with Your gracious love, forgiveness, and protection we will not be moved. Indeed, we will live forever with You because Jesus has died for our sins and He is risen from the dead, so we too shall rise like him!

We live in a world full of all kinds of wickedness. All too often we are tempted to follow those wicked ways, approve of them, and receive the approval of the world which rejoices in them. Forgive us, O Lord, for Jesus sake! By the working of Your Holy Spirit make us upright in heart and do Your good and gracious will in us.

Lord, we know that You will deal with the wicked and the evil doers who reject Your will and Your Word. As we live in this world and experience the impact of sin in our lives we pray that you would give us peace in Jesus who has overcome all wickedness and evil by His death and resurrection. He is our Prince of Peace. Help us rest in Him forever. Amen.
