Welcome to
Devotions for Worship where we meditate on the appointed Scripture readings for
the upcoming Sunday. I am Pastor Eric Tritten from Gloria Dei Lutheran Church
in Hudson, OH. Thank you for being with me today.
The Psalm
appointed for Transfiguration Sunday is Psalm 50:1-6.
The Reading:
Ps. 50:1-6 (ESV)
A Psalm of Asaph.
The Mighty One,
God the LORD,
speaks
and summons the earth from the rising of the sun to its setting.
2 Out of Zion, the perfection of
beauty,
God
shines forth.
3 Our God comes;
he
does not keep silence;
before him is a
devouring fire,
around
him a mighty tempest.
4 He calls to the heavens above and
to the earth, that he may judge his people:
5 "Gather to me my faithful
ones, who made a covenant with me by sacrifice!"
6 The heavens declare his
righteousness, for God himself is judge! Selah
(Ps. 50:1-6 ESV)
Comments:
Did you notice
how the Psalm describes God in His glory and power? God indeed shines forth,
and Jesus shined forth at His transfiguration to reveal His majesty, authority
and power.
The psalm also
reminds us that God does not keep silence. He calls. He speaks and summons. How
beautifully this reminds us of God’s statement about Jesus, “This is My beloved
Son; listen to Him.”
Meditate on this
psalm today. Think about how God speaks and summons in the creation and how He
sustains creation by His Word. Also consider how God has not kept silent but
has spoken to His people in Jesus and judged all of our sin in Jesus’ body on
the cross so that we might be righteous in His sight.

Prayers:
O God, You are
great, glorious, and powerful. You are not silent. You call. You speak and
summon. Thank You for calling us to faith. Thank You for speaking to us through
Jesus, and for summoning us into Your kingdom. Forgive us for not listening
when You speak. Forgive us for not recognizing Your declarations of
righteousness in the creation. Forgive us for Jesus sake, because He was judged
in our place. Please give us faith to trust in You as the Mighty One, our God
and Lord. Help us to live under Your authority, and, even more, to live in Your
grace for Jesus’ sake. Amen.
Memory Verse:
2 Corinthians 4:6
- For God, who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," has shone in
our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face
of Jesus Christ. (2 Cor. 4:6 ESV)
Thank you so much
for using Devotions for Worship, I pray that our time together has blessed you
and given you something to meditate on – some reminder of God’s grace to rattle
around in your brain – for the rest of the day.
I want to remind
you to be prayerfully and thoughtfully generous in the giving of alms during
this Advent season. Pray that God open your eyes, your heart, and your hand to
help others in need.
Another
devotional habit we can use to help us meditate on God’s word is memorization.
Would you do me a
favor? If you got something out of this devotional time, would you like and/or
share it on Facebook, Twitter, or wherever you do social media? That would help
me get the word out, and hopefully help these devotions be a blessing to others.
God bless you!
