What is Jesus thinking about in the last days of his
life? He’s thinking about the End. No, it’s not his end, his death, that he is
focused on in this reading but the End of All Things, the End of the World.
Why would that matter?
It is a matter of accountability. The day will come when
we will be judged. A comparison will be made between our lives and the glorious
perfect will of God.
I’m told that people don’t worry much about The End
anymore, but they do. Perhaps not in the same way, but there is still much
wondering about what happens when we die, worry about overpopulation, and
fearful prediction of environmental doom. They are still worried about the End.
They have just removed God from the equation, which is not wise.
So why is Jesus thinking about the End?
Because without his death and resurrection, there is no
hope at the end. We all sin and fall short of the glory of God. It is Jesus’
sacrifice and victory that secure God’s forgiveness, life, and salvation for
us. This is why he came.
Lord Jesus, thank
you for removing the fear of the End from us. Protect our hearts so that we
will not be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the cares of this
life, and keep us in true faith and forgiveness through the End and into
eternal glory. Amen.
