Psalm 126 is one of the Psalms of Ascents. These Psalms were
sung on the way up to Jerusalem, often for the Passover. (One always goes up to
Jerusalem as it is on the top of a hill.) There were probably people singing
this Psalm as they came to the Passover Feast the week that Jesus was
crucified.
Notice how the Psalm speaks of those who experience God’s
blessings and salvation as those who dream. What God has done can seem like
dream. It seems too good to be true!
Tears and troubles fill our day-to-day lives. The way of
this world seems to be weeping and a sense of futility, but God gives us hope
to thwart the futility. That hope is centered on Jesus who through weeping
allowed his body to be sown – to be planted in the grave – so that we might
come home with shouts of joy.
Where are you experiencing tears and weeping through the
troubles of life? How does the joy of Jesus’ resurrection give you hope in your
times of weeping?
O LORD,
weeping is all too common in our lives. Fill us with the joy of your salvation.
Set our hearts on Jesus so that we might see the tears of this life as seeds
that will grow into hope in the light of his death and resurrection. Amen.
