I don’t know anything about David Petersen beyond that he
is a pastor in Fort Wayne, IN. I appreciated his words on peace in the Church
even in a time of division and conflict.
Quote I’m
Pondering
“Scripture is not the great American novel. We do not
assign meaning to it. It has meaning. What matters is not what it means to us,
but what it means for us.” – Rev. Wade Johnston
One Good Thing
This Week
Yesterday (May 30), we had the funeral and luncheon for
Elaine Steidl. Once again, your outpouring of love for the family was amazing
as so many set up, cooked, cleaned up, and generally supported the Steidls,
along with their friends and family. There was, however, a piece of the action
yesterday of which you might not be aware.
There was an older couple here for Elaine’s funeral who
were estranged from their son. There was hurt over other family issues and
there had been a lot of hostility between the son and his parents. The mother
came to me between the burial and the luncheon to tell me that her estranged
son had come to the funeral. He sat with them. He spent the day with his mom
and dad, and, at the end of the day, it seemed like there was a good chance for
some lasting reconciliation between them.
In 2 Corinthians 5, Jesus’ work is described as
reconciling us to God. By extension the ministry of God’s people becomes a
ministry of reconciliation – first with God and then with others. You never
know how God is going to use us, or our lives, to perform his ministry.
Our Scripture
readings for Seventh Sunday of Easter are:
Over the years, I have learned that those who read the
Scripture lessons and spend a little time thinking about them before church on
Sunday get more out of the service.
The sermon is: Those Who Will Believe
