July 5 - Four Things on Friday

Four Things on Friday
July 5, 2019

An Interesting Article/Podcast
On Sunday, the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team will play against the Netherlands for the FIFA World Cup. That’s pretty exciting stuff. Women’s sports, however, are a relatively new thing on the modern stage. I was born the year that Title IX became law. (Title IX is the law that was used to require schools to provide opportunities for girls’ sports. And, yes, that’s a gross over-simplification.) The Thread works its way backward through history, starting with the 1999 Women’s World Cup which the U.S. team famously won on Brandi Chastain’s shootout goal, to examine how women’s sports have gotten to where they are today. It’s a fascinating topic, even if it is not churchy or theological.

Bible Verse I’m Pondering
“The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send our laborers into His harvest.” – Jesus, quoted in Luke 10:2

One Good Thing This Week
The holiday week has been rather quiet. It is vacation time and I think the traffic at church reflects that. One of those vacationers is Becka, our office administrator. She definitely deserves the time off! That being said, the folks who have stepped up to keep things running in the office have been tremendous. As I observe their work, it seems to me that one of the reasons they are helping out is because they love Becka (and the church). It’s a good thing when love moves people to help.

Our Scripture readings for the 4th Sunday after Pentecost are:
Over the years I have learned that those who read the Scripture lessons and spend a little time thinking about them before church on Sunday get more out of the service.
Luke 10:1-20
Isaiah 66:10-14
Galatians 6:1-10, 14-18
Psalm 66:1-7

The sermon is: The Harvest

There will be no Four Things on Friday on July 12 or 19, or if there is, consider it a bonus. I will be traveling a lot July 10-26, first with the National Youth Gathering and then with our last family trip of the summer.
