Alan Jacobs is a professor of humanities in the honors
program at Baylor University. I am currently reading his book by the same
title. The link above will take you to a YouTube video of Jacobs lecturing on
the book at a conference at Abilene Christian University. His audience is
Christian, and Jacobs dwells on the idea of conversion a bit, but his main
point relates to how intellectual change brings social risk to those who change
their thinking.

We are drowning in information while starving for wisdom.

One Good Thing
This Week
There was a meeting on Wednesday evening of a group of
ladies who discussed women’s ministry at Gloria Dei. To my mind this seems like
a good start toward being intentionally focused on the purpose, mission, and
activities related to women’s ministry and creating opportunities for
fellowship, growth, service, and advancement of God’s Kingdom. Those are good
things! However, I would point out another really good thing in this event: It
was “lay led.” It was not driven by the staff. It was begun and driven by
members of the congregation. I really believe that is a big key to the success
of the church; when members take on, begin, and lead ministries. It is a
beautiful thing.
Anyone interested in do this for men’s ministry?
Our Scripture
readings for the Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost are:
Over the years I have learned that those who read the
Scripture lessons and spend a little time thinking about them before church on
Sunday get more out of the service.
The sermon is: Only So Long
