An Interesting
Article/Podcast
If you follow me on Facebook, you may have seen this
article from The New York Times. The areas of the country they talk about are
not where we are currently working, but I’ve been to all of them. On our first
mission trip from Gloria Dei we stayed in Léogâne and helped to build a house. We
were hoping to have another trip down there this year, and this is why we haven’t
gone and have no plans to go. It is a very sad state of affairs. This country
badly needs prayer.
I remember a conversation with my now sainted friend, Pr.
Israel Izidore, from Les Cayes. He said he had given up on the political
structures of Haiti. There was only one power that could effect the change the
country needs. He said that only Jesus could heal that land.
Lord, have mercy on Haiti! Seyè, gen pitye pou Ayiti!
Quote I’m
Pondering
“Be diligent to grow intellectually. Your mind is a
muscle, and it becomes flaccid and stale if it is not used. We do not train a
lot of Christian leaders to think. We train them to have right answers. We
train them to make the right kind of appearances. We don't teach them how to
think thoroughly and deeply, and that was one of the things that I regretted in
my younger adult years.” - Gordon McDonald on the Carey Nieuwhof Leadership

One Good Thing
This Week
I really thought that this was going to be all about the
construction starting. It’s not that the construction didn’t start. It has. It’s
just that something else happened that is really good.
On Sunday after the late service we had a baptism through
Lutheran Campus Ministry of Kent (LCMK). A young lady named Yingmei (Ying –
may) learned about Jesus from Pr. Voelker and she wanted to be baptized. She is
now, technically, a member of Gloria Dei and will worship with us from
time-to-time and commune with us at the altar. One of our families was talking
with her afterward and making plans to invest in Yingmei to help her continue
to grow in her faith. This was so wonderful!
I am so thankful that we are involved with LCMK and that
we have the opportunity to support their (our!) mission work. What a blessing
it is to see people come to faith through the ministry we are supporting.
Our Scripture
readings for Reformation Sunday are:
Over the years I have learned that those who read the
Scripture lessons and spend a little time thinking about them before church on
Sunday get more out of the service.
The sermon is: Worship Him Who Made Heaven and Earth
