This
weekend I received news that the situation for our friends in Haiti has become
critical. Sadly, our media has not done much reporting on this, but Haiti is
currently in chaos. Protests over corruption in the government, already poor
infrastructure, and the oppressive poverty which leaves many citizens in a very
vulnerable condition have come together to create an untenable situation. There
are fuel shortages which led to power outages across the nation. Food is in
short supply. Roads are blocked and travel is all-but-impossible. The schools
have not opened this fall, and most of the nation’s banks are closed. In short,
the situation is dire.
The
missionaries from other nations have been evacuated from Haiti, but our friends
and partners in ministry are still there representing Jesus to their neighbors.
Ministry in Mission, a ministry we have partnered with for our medical mission,
is seeking funds to help our friends. They feed orphans and the elderly. There
are 500 prisoners that they are trying to feed in the local jail. They are
trying to shine the light of Christ in a very dark time for their country.
You
can learn more about what our partners in Haiti are doing through www.ministryinmission.org. There is
also the opportunity to donate through their webpage. Additionally we will
collect a freewill offering this Sunday. Please use the pew envelopes and mark
the donations for Haiti. We will get them to Ministry in Mission who has been
able to successfully wire funds to our Haitian Friends.
Please
keep our brothers and sisters in Christ in Haiti in your prayers. Please pray
especially for Pr. Marky Kessa, who is also the mayor of Jacmel, Pr. George
Georgejeanky, who is his assistant, and the other pastors who work with them.
These men are in danger because of their leadership positions and because they
often go about providing for others. Pray for God’s protection, wisdom, and
courage for these leaders. Please also pray for justice, peace, and security
for the people of Haiti.
Blessings,
Pastor
