Happy All Saints Day!
An Interesting
Document
It seemed appropriate to post this document since yesterday
was Reformation Day. Luther wrote many books, articles, letters, sermons, and
other documents across his life. The American Edition of Luther’s Works, a
compilation of his writings, is over 55 volumes, and there are more documents
that have not been translated into English! The 95 Theses are
obviously historically significant and are often recognized as the catalyst for
the Reformation. They are not, however, his most important writing. They are
not even particularly “Lutheran.” In fact, there are some of the theses that we
would outright reject. However, they served as a “shot heard round the world,”
and Luther would continue to question, search the Scriptures and find more
doctrines that needed to be reformed. I’ll share parts of some of those
documents with you in the future.
Quote I’m
Pondering
“Unless I can be instructed and convinced with evidence
from the Holy Scriptures or with open, clear, and distinct grounds and
reasoning – and my conscience is captive to the Word of God – then I cannot and
will not recant, because it is neither safe nor wise to act against conscience.
Here I stand. I can do no other. God help me! Amen.” – Martin Luther, April 18,
1518, The Diet (Meeting) at Worms.
One Good Thing
This Week
The church smells delicious! Over the last couple weeks a
group of ladies has come up here to bake gingerbread boys, and the whole church
smells wonderful from the baking. In addition, it is just nice to have the
extra activity in the kitchen. I love stopping by and seeing them working and talking
with one another … and perhaps getting a cookie … or two.
Our Scripture
readings for All Saints’ Sunday are:
Over the years I have learned that those who read the
Scripture lessons and spend a little time thinking about them before church on
Sunday get more out of the service.
The sermon is: Salvation Belongs To Our God
