This week’s sermon will be:

Prepare

This week’s readings are:

Malachi 3:1-7b

Philippians 1:2-11

Luke 3:1-20

Psalm 66:1-12

Message:

A perennial question: Can’t we just sing Christmas carols?

Can/Can’t – these are strong words for people who are free in Jesus.

Check out The Antidote to “Sadvent” by Prof. Ken Sundet Jones.

Advent is a time of anticipation.

-        Joy

-        Excitement

-        Hope

-        Expectation

Hymns

-        Dance – On Jordan’s Bank & Lift Up Your Heads Ye Mighty Gates

-        Hopeful – Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus & Comfort, Comfort Ye My People

-        Mystery? – The King Shall Come When Morning Dawns

-        Defiant Proclamation of the Gospel – Savior of the Nations, Come

These are good … too good to just rush past.

Christmas is good too … the celebration of the Incarnation.

-        Jesus comes in His body and blood in the Lord’s Supper

-        So, we’ll sing Christmas Hymns during the distribution.

Devotions? In the Car?

-        Sing what you want!

-        Keep the big picture:

o   The Manger is empty.

o   The Cross is empty.

o   The Tomb is empty.

o   We aren’t waiting for Christmas. We are waiting for Jesus!

Advent Services

-        December 1 & 8 – Noon & 7 p.m.

Christmas Cantata

-        December 15 – 7 p.m.

There is a rumor that we’ve never done Advent Services.

-        We have as long as I’ve been here. (Almost 11 years now!)

-        They’re good.
