Message:

Devotion to the Word

“Devotion is the deep reverence of an individual for a particular article of the Christian faith, often expressed in a variety of contemplative and active practices that manifest the working of the Spirit in that time and place.” – Rev. Dr. David Schmitt, Concordia Seminary, St. Louis

When we talk about a “particular article of the Christian faith” we are talking about things that the Word proclaims.

Devotion to the Word – Foundational and Connected to All Forms of Devotion

-        Psalm 119:97 – I love your law, O LORD …

-        Colossians 3:16 - Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.

-        Acts 2:42 - And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.

This Form of Devotion Might Look Like –

-        Reading Scripture

o   Books at a time.

§  Alone or with others!

o   Short segments with great focus.

o   Sporadically but with great fervor.

o   Lectio Divina

§  Communal reading

-        Meditation – Psalm 1:2 (delight in the law meditates day and night)

-        Memorization – Psalm 119:11 (stored, hidden, treasured)

-        Listening to Sermons – Acts 2:42

-        Bible Study – Acts 17:11

What do you think? Is this part of your devotional life? How do you express devotion to the Word in your life?
