The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe - Aslan

 

This Sunday, July 10, is the Fifth Sunday after Pentecost.

This week’s sermon is Walk: In A Manner Worthy. The next four weeks our sermons will draw on the book of Colossians. You might want to read the whole letter as you prepare for worship – it is only four chapters long.

Message: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe – Aslan

Aslan is the Turkish Word for Lion.

-        This is Lewis’s Christ figure in the book.

-        The Lion is the King of Beasts

o   “The Son of the Great King Beyond the Sea”

o   “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews”

-        Jesus is the Lion of Judah.

-        He is called a lion in Revelation.

 Aslan is

-        Huge

-        Grave

-        Noble

-        Powerful

-        Confident

-        Kind

 Key Ideas about Aslan

-        He’s not a tame lion.

o   The nature of God.

o   Small Catechism Explanation – the Omnis

-        He is much greater than the queen/witch.

o   Not the duality many imagine of God and the devil.

-        He is not safe, but he is good.

o   This is an important lesson about God.

o   Psalms often wrestle with God’s hidden will and his goodness.

 Throughout the Chronicles Aslan is the lord of Narnia

-        Kings and Queens serve at his pleasure.

-        He brings saviors – like Judges.

-        He stands as the judge.

-        He delivers mercy and grace.
