Message: Sunday School Kick Off

1.     Historically, it has been a very big deal in protestant denominations, but not so much in Lutheran Church until relatively recently (the past 100 years).

b.     Lutherans preferred home devotions.

c.      Special Catechesis was done with the pastor to prepare for Confirmation.

2.     Sunday School is a good thing!

a.      Sunday School for our children (3yrs old – 5th grade)

                                                    i.     Focusing on the New Testament this year.

iii.     Focusing on the life of Jesus starting with Advent.

ii.     Ephesians 6:11 - Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.

                                                iii.     Studying the Ten Commandments

c.      High School

                                                    i.     Mornings – fellowship and food

ii.     Evening – study and prayer (Starting September 18)

                                                iii.     Team App.

3.     Sunday School is good for adults, too.

a.      Primary predictor of children remaining connected to church throughout their lives – mom and dad.

b.     One of the biggest investments parents can make in their kids’ future in the faith – Bible Study and Worship attendance.

c.      Not just for parents, though.

                                                    i.     Hebrews 5:11-14 - About this we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing. 12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, 13 for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child. 14 But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.

ii.     This is one of the biggest struggles of the church today.

iii.     This is salutary – health and life giving.

d.     Studies for Adults

                                                    i.     The Chosen – led by Del Proudfoot.

ii.     Romans – led by me.

iii.     On Sept. 11 – Pr. Farrukh Khan of People of the Book Lutheran Outreach.

4.     We are disciples – that is, students.

a.      Christian – 3x in the Bible.

b.     Disciples – over 300x.

c.      A great opportunity to grow in faith and knowledge of the Lord.
