Message: Lenten Prep – Daily Devotions

Luther D. Reed (1873-1972) – Pastor, Professor at Lutheran Theological Seminary in Philadelphia – Important for bringing traditional Lutheran Worship into English for American Churches.

“Private devotion is the duty and privilege of the individual. It may well be artless, that is, spontaneous and free. Public worship, on the other hand, is the privilege and responsibility of the church. It must be ordered and administered.”

Two Parts of the Life of Faith

Devotion – Person, Family, Small, Informal – with many variations.

Public Worship – Congregation, Gathered Believers, Gottesdienst, Formal – more structured.

Both Matter

This Week – a little about Devotion.

Next Week – a little about Midweek Lenten Services

Devotion – broad – Devotion to a particular teaching in the Bible that leads to actions that have the effect of showing the Holy Spirit is at work.
