Things You Didn't Learn in Sunday School About ... Pentecost

This Sunday, May 28 is The Day of Pentecost

Verse of the Season/Month:

Psalm 25:1-2, 4-5

To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.
O my God, in you I trust;
    let me not be put to shame;
    let not my enemies exult over me.

Make me to know your ways, O Lord;
    teach me your paths.
Lead me in your truth and teach me,
    for you are the God of my salvation;
    for you I wait all the day long.

Things You Didn’t Learn in Sunday School – Pentecost

We’re going to revisit some familiar Sunday School Lessons

            You think differently than you did when you were a child!

            These are stories of people.

                        They tell of how God’s salvation played out in the lives of individuals.

                        The Christian faith is not some kind of mystical quest. It is real life in the real world.

                        June 7 – Abram

Today and May 31 – a little different from the rest of the series.

            An event – Pentecost

            A doctrine – Trinity

            These match up with the Sunday readings.

So, let’s dive in!

            Pentecost – Acts 2

            The 2nd Pilgrimage Festival of each year.

50 days after Passover.

50 days after Easter!

Explains why so many people were there in Jerusalem.

Originally, this was a celebration bringing in the first fruits of spring wheat.

Later, it became an observance of the Law given to Moses on Mt. Sinai.

These are both important images to understand what God is doing.

            The Event 2:1-4

                        Wind

Fire

            We often perceive as destructive.

            Purifying!

                        Tongues – Undoing Babel

            An Initial Response 2:5-13

                        Drunk!

            Peter’s Sermon

                        3000 people come to faith – baptized for the forgiveness of sins.

                                    From 120ish to over 3000!

                        First Fruits of a kingdom of God harvest! The first of many more who would believe through the preaching of the Apostles.

                        This is also related to the Commemoration of the Giving of the Law

                                    We are all trapped under the Law in Sin

                                    Law applied to Peter’s hearers

                                    “God has made Jesus, whom you crucified Lord and Messiah!”

                                    They were cut to the heart. – Law always accuses!

                        This is God’s response to humanity breaking the law

                                    Jesus crucified and raised.

                                    Holy Spirit testifying through the Apostles to call, gather, and enlighten those who heard the Word preached to them

                                                He still does this!
