Things You Didn’t Learn In Sunday School About … John

The only disciple to witness the crucifixion.

                        Blood and Water

One of the first to go to Jesus’ empty tomb Easter morning.

Wrote – Gospel, 3 Letters/Epistles, and the Revelation.

              Later in life.

Tradition

              Youngest of the Disciples

                        Jesus’ Trial

                                    Well-connected family

The only one of the 12 to die a natural death.

                        Poisoned

                        Exiled

Lived to be about 100 years old

The last touchstone back to Jesus.

Love

              John 13:34 – A new command I give you ….

Jesus loved in a way that met people where they were and called them to repentance.

              Love vs. acceptance

1 John 3:4-6 - Everyone who commits sin practices lawlessness; and sin is lawlessness. You know that he was revealed so that he might take away sins, and there is no sin in him. Everyone who remains in him does not sin; everyone who sins has not seen him or known him.

              Love and Truth

1 John 1:1-3 - What was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have observed and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life— that life was revealed, and we have seen it and we testify and declare to you the eternal life that was with the Father and was revealed to us— what we have seen and heard we also declare to you, so that you may also have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ.

Love … the essence of God

                        1 John 4:8 – God is love

1 John 4:9-11 – God’s love was revealed among us in this way: God sent his one and only Son into the world so that we might live through him. 10 Love consists in this: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. 11 Dear friends, if God loved us in this way, we also must love one another.

The Cross is the event that reveals God’s love

The mark of the Christian life

1 John 3:18 - Little children, let us not love in word or speech, but in action and in truth.
